Viknan

As a UX/UI designer, I’m passionate about crafting seamless, user-focused digital experiences. I blend aesthetics and functionality from Norway, Hawaii, Eindhoven, and Sydney to bring ideas to life. With expertise in Figma, prototyping, and design systems, I transform concepts into visually striking, meaningful solutions.

When I’m not designing, I’m chasing life’s adventures. Whether it’s skateboarding, busting moves on the dance floor, or exploring new places. I’m always looking for that next thrill.

A Dutch app concept, designed for saving energy

Role:Location:Duration:
UX DesignerEindhoven4 Weeks
Responsibility:Tools:
UX DesignFigma
Design ProcessMiro

Product Overview

Home Life is an innovative energy-saving app that integrates social media features with practical energy management to promote sustainable living. Developed during my Industrial Design studies at Eindhoven University of Technology, it addresses the potential for urban households to reduce energy consumption by optimizing natural sunlight.

Problem Statement

Despite ample natural light availability, many urban households waste energy due to inefficient lighting practices. According to Philips Lighting, this inefficiency contributes significantly to global energy consumption, increasing costs, and environmental impact (Philips Lighting, 2023).

Goals

Addressing these inefficiencies with innovative solutions is key. For example, Home Life is an energy-saving app. It is designed to optimize natural light usage. This can lead to reduced energy bills. It also promotes a more sustainable lifestyle for urban dwellers.

Target Audience

Viknan

Targeting students aged 18-30 for the Home Life app makes sense. This group is tech-savvy and values sustainability. They seek intuitive solutions to reduce energy bills and align with their eco-conscious lifestyles.

User Research

To inform the development of Home Life, I examined the Philips Hue app for its energy-saving features and IKEA’s smart lighting products, which dim or switch off based on movement. I also conducted a survey among students to estimate their daily energy usage and potential savings, complemented by online interviews with friends in Norway and in-person interviews with students at the design facility in Eindhoven. These methods provided valuable insights into user behaviors and preferences, shaping the design of Home Life.

Competitive Analysis

Home Life stands out by optimizing natural light usage, integrating social media features for communal energy-saving efforts, and providing room-by-room energy tracking and control. It also includes motion sensing for automatic lighting adjustments, offers affordability, and engages users with educational content and gamified energy-saving challenges. These unique features position Home Life as a comprehensive, user-friendly, and cost-effective solution, surpassing competitors like Google Nest, Sense, and EnergyHub.

Quantitative Research

We used quantitative research to understand students' energy-saving behaviors and living preferences. Structured surveys measured their energy awareness, interest in monitoring apps, and opinions on features like automatic lighting and social integration. These insights shaped Home Life to meet their specific needs effectively.

Screeners

  • How often do you manually adjust your lights during the day to save energy?

  • How aware are you of your daily energy consumption?

  • How interested are you in using an app to monitor and reduce your energy consumption?

  • Would you find it helpful if an app could automatically adjust lighting based on natural light availability?

  • Do you think having social features (sharing tips, and progress) in an energy-saving app would motivate you to save more energy?

  • How likely are you to recommend an energy-saving app to your friends or family?

Observation

  • 50% manually adjust their lights to save energy.

  • 64% find automatic lighting adjustment very helpful.

  • 35% are likely to recommend energy-saving apps.

Empathy Map

This empathy map reflects students' thoughts, actions, and emotions about energy-saving behaviors and their openness to technology solutions like energy-saving apps.

SaysThinksDoesFeels
I want to save on electricity, but I forget to turn off the lights.Automating lighting based on natural light could save money.Downloads energy-saving apps but deletes them due to complexity.Motivated to save money but struggles with consistency.
I sometimes adjust lights manually but often forget.Would an energy-tracking app make a difference?Occasionally shares energy-saving tips with friends or roommates.Curious about using technology for energy efficiency.
An app that helps manage energy would be really useful.Reducing energy use helps the environment.Discusses energy-saving ideas and implements them when convenient.Feels responsible for reducing their environmental footprint but needs practical solutions.

Pain Points

Viknan
  • Forgetting to Adjust Lights
Students often forget to turn off lights, leading to unnecessary energy waste and higher bills.

  • Complex Energy Apps
Many find existing energy-saving apps too complicated, leading to frustration and low adoption.

  • Inconsistent Energy Habits
Despite interest in saving energy, students struggle with consistency due to busy schedules and other priorities.
